Let’s Get Back on Track

My last blog entry (https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/frugal-vegas/?p=3436) generated a record number of comments. Now I really love it when a subject produces a good discussion with helpful information.  However, sometimes a thread goes off the track and quickly degenerates into personal arguments that upset – or at least bore the majority of readers.  I am always willing to allow, even encourage, a diversity of opinion, but the conversation must stay polite and not include personal attacks.  You can disagree strongly with someone’s ideas but you can’t call them insulting names.

Comments must also not ramble too far off the original subject.  That is what has happened here.  So I am going to more carefully monitor comments in the future and not approve any that seem more disruptive than helpful.  This blog is not a democratic endeavor.  I have absolute power over the Comment Kingdom.   🙂  I try to be a loving monarch – but sometimes my patience runs out and it is “Off with Your Head” – your comment will go to the deleted file.

Let me explain the basic premise of this blog.  There are all kinds of gamblers in casinos.   Some are the laughing casual players who have no other goal than to have fun.  Some are the beady-eyed who never smile because they are concentrating on the calculator running in their heads at all times; they are in a casino strictly to make money.  Between these two categories are the most of us:  We would like to make some money while we are having fun.

This huge middle group is the group I want to help – because everyone in this group wouldn’t mind winning more and losing less.  But there are so many differences in this group:  how much money they have to spend on gambling; what type of game entertains them the most; how much time or desire they have to study the subject; what personality they have.  I could go on and on about individual differences.

Because I have to think about this when I choose my subjects, I write about all kinds of games – slots, table games, video poker.  I talk about playing at all denominations, for the low-roller and the high-roller.  I give basic information – use slot club benefits and multiple point promotions – which even the most casual slot player can use to make their bankroll go further and thus they can play longer and increase their fun time.  Sometimes I give more complex details, i.e., about how to use the host system to help high-denomination video poker players find better plays.

You are all part of my “kingdom” – let’s have it a peaceful place where we can all find more ways to have more fun when we enter a casino and maybe leave a little less money there when we leave.

    Jean,

    Hopefully this is on topic.

You have made me very aware, over the years, of the fact all gamblers have different goals.

For example, I will only play a positive game since I live out of state and do not get to take advantage of local promotions. However, I do get free rooms and some food comps which is great for a quarter player.

I have a friend that lives in Vegas and she is all about the comps for being 7 Star. She cannot understand at all why I play the way I do. However, I know for a fact that she is down every year $8,000 to $10,000 playing double-double: But, she gets unbelievable comps which are probably worth $20,000+(prepaid vacation?).

I go for the cash, she enjoys what she does and is able to take advantage of comps that could never work for me.

I have fun and usually leave ahead:) Each to their own.

    James

Aside from problem or professional gamblers, most of us “would like to make some money while we are having fun.” I think your gambline philosophy fits most of us just fine. Keep up the good work in enlightening us to the best of your ability. And what about part 2 of your poignant personal story?

    Jean,

What about your story, let the people bicker at will: lets get on with the part II & III, of how you got here!

Jean, I would like to apologize for taking the prior topic off-track, though I did think my comments were germane in that I have observed in many friends and acquaintances the dynamics and factors that make for happy and unhappy “gambling couples.” As money is generally acknowledged to be the single greatest cause of marital friction, it seems that even mild disagreements on how and how much to gamble are potential minefields. You and Brad have been successful in no small part because you’ve largely been on the same page.

Jean, I hope that most of your readers feel that your blog is a lot like your former profession.
Everyone learns in a different way. You sure make learning a fun way even on subjects that we haven’t experienced yet.
I feel that you certainly paint a wonderful picture with your words. I love attending the school in the “kindom” of Queen Jean.
